Irene Marie Urban, 98, formerly of Institute, was called Home to be with the Lord, Thursday morning, Feb. 6, 2025 at Shawano Place Senior Living where she had been residing the past three years.
She was born Aug. 11, 1926 in Sturgeon Bay, one of ten children of Joseph and Hattie J. (Stoeger) Weber. Irene grew up on the family dairy farm in Institute and attended Saints Peter and Paul Parish and School. She graduated from Sevastopol High School with the class of 1944. Later that year, on October 28, Irene was united in marriage to Carl Frederick Urban at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
She held several part-time jobs including helping at her brother Arnold’s accounting business in Sturgeon Bay. Irene and Carl were blessed with a daughter, Carol. For most of their married life, their family lived in the Town of Jacksonport and then moved to Institute in the Town of Sevastopol, right on Highway 57. In addition to caring for her family and home, Irene was a business partner for Carl, helping with the books and with anything else that needed to be done for her husband’s motor carrier business, Lake to Lake Dairy, which served the entire county. She also served as the treasurer for the Town of Jacksonport.
Irene was a lifelong member of Saints Peter and Paul Parish. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters in Sturgeon Bay.
Irene was a great seamstress who was always willing to share her craft with those who were willing to learn. Irene also enjoyed bowling in life. She loved her family, especially her grandsons.
Irene and Carl were blessed with over 68 years of marriage. Carl preceded her in death on December 17, 2012.
Irene will be missed by her daughter, Carol Anschutz of Shawano; two grandsons, Steven Anschutz of New Castle, PA and Brian Anschutz of Shawano; great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Allison Anschutz; many beloved nieces and nephews; other relatives; and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Merlin Anschutz; grandson, Jason Anschutz; siblings, Helen Meyer, Arthur, William, Leonard, Mildred “Milly” Kipp, Arnold, Clyde, Dorothy Urban, and Robert “R.D.”; sisters-in-law, Mathilda Felhofer and Caroline Schoenbrunn; and other relatives.
A Mass of Christian Burial was prayed at 11 am. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute with Fr. Matthew Rappl as celebrant. She was laid to rest in the church cemetery beside her husband, Carl.
The Rosary was prayed at church on Wednesday at 9:15 am with visitation for family and friends continuing from 9:30 am until 10:40 am.
