Southern Door’s boys basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit Thursday when the Eagles won their Packerland Conference finale at home over Oconto, 69-54.
In addition to Southern Door finishing the regular season with a perfect conference record of 16-0 and its third consecutive league title, which includes a 46-game Packerland winning streak dating back to the start of the 2022-23 season, senior guard Drew Daoust became only the second boys basketball player in state history to reach 3,000 career points.
Daoust, who entered the game within 23 points of 3,000, reached the scoring milestone in the second half when he ended up with a game-high 34 points. Caden Pierre added 18 points for the Eagles.
Three Blue Devils scored in double figures led by Carter Koch with 24 points, including five threes. Cooper Campshure added 11 points, with Mason Colvin scoring 10 more.
The game marked the second time this season Southern Door needed a second-half comeback against Oconto when the Eagles fought back from a 40-31 halftime deficit by outscoring the Blue Devils 38-14 in the final 18 minutes.
Southern Door benefited from its opportunities at the free-throw line, shooting 19-29, compared to 3-4 for Oconto, which also put the Eagles on the charity stripe with multiple technical fouls in the game’s final minutes.
Next week begins the postseason for the boys basketball teams. Southern Door received a No. 2 seed and opening-round bye in its WIAA Division 4 regional. The Eagles will host a regional semifinal March 7 at 7 pm against the winner of the March 4 quarterfinal between No. 10-seeded St. Mary Catholic and No. 7-seeded Crivitz.
