Kobie Flowers, partner at Brown, Goldstein & Levy, joined the speaking faculty at the American Bar Association 40th White Collar Crime Institute for the second year in a row. The four-day conference was hosted from March 4 to 7 at the Hyatt Regency in Miami, Florida. Partner Jacqui Cadman also joined Kobie as an attendee. The Institute serves as the premier gathering for legal professionals specializing in white-collar crime.
Kobie hosted a breakout session focused on opening statements and closing arguments. Kobie served as session moderator and was joined by the Hon. Richard Franklin Boulware II, United States District Judge for the District of Nevada; Jason Downs from Hogan Lovells US LLP; Sara Kropf from Kropf Moseley LLP; and Shaffy Moeel from Moeel Lah Fakhoury LLP. Kobie and the session’s panelists discussed the art of persuasion, stylistic approaches and technical and ethical considerations for opening statements and closing arguments. To demonstrate, the panelists conducted a mock opening and closing of a recent white-collar case, followed by a critique of the mock trial by the attending audience.
Kobie’s session was one of many opportunities for attendees to gain valuable insight into legal developments across the country and develop skills related to trial law and white-collar defense. Other topics covered by the significant speaker faculty included jury selection, ethical dilemmas, artificial intelligence, and more. Notably, attendees were joined by the Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court for a Fireside Chat with Ismail Ramsey, the former United States Attorney for the Northern District of California.
With over 20 years of courtroom experience as a trial lawyer, Kobie has litigated cases in federal and state courts throughout the United States and internationally in the military commissions in Guantanamo Bay. Kobie is a preeminent white-collar crime defense attorney who is often tapped to speak and teach on the subject across the country.
