Stay Secure: Ransomware Threats Explained

Picture this: It’s Monday morning, you sit down to start your day, and your computer flashes a red screen. A message appears: “Your files are encrypted. Pay to regain access.”

This is ransomware, one of the fastest-growing threats to businesses. Cybercriminals use tactics like phishing emails to install ransomware, locking your files and demanding payment – often in cryptocurrency. They may even threaten to leak sensitive data if you don’t comply.

The consequences? Lost data, expensive recovery efforts, and a damaged reputation.

Here’s how you can protect your business:

  • Educate your team: Train employees to spot phishing emails and avoid suspicious links or attachments.
  • Update regularly: Keep software and security systems up to date to close vulnerabilities.
  • Back up wisely: Use isolated, offline backups and test them regularly to ensure they work.

Did You Know?

Beware of malicious QR codes in PDFs!

Cybercriminals have a new trick: hiding harmful QR codes inside PDF attachments. These codes bypass email security filters, luring people to scan them with less secure personal devices.

The result? They gain access to sensitive data or deliver malware to your device.

Stay cautious. Don’t scan QR codes unless you’re 100% certain they’re safe.

New to Microsoft: Custom AI in Copilot Studio

Microsoft is making AI more accessible with Copilot Studio. Soon, you’ll be able to create custom AI agents tailored to your business needs. These agents can automate tasks like checking customer details or managing inventory—all without coding skills.

Ten ready-made agents are already in public beta and can be customised for tasks like sales and case management. Expect to see a wider rollout soon, making automation easier for businesses of all sizes.

Not Using Copilot? Adjust the Shortcut Key

Microsoft is also giving users more flexibility with the Copilot key in Windows 11. With the latest updates (23H2 and 24H2), you can now customise the key to open different Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

For users with the new Copilot+ PCs, the Copilot key is built-in and previously opened the Copilot panel. However, it will soon offer more options based on your preferences.

If your keyboard doesn’t have a dedicated Copilot key, this change won’t affect you—but it’s a useful tweak for those using Microsoft’s latest tools.
