Von Stiehl Winery kicked off a series of four mixology classes with a Fundamentals of Mixology workshop on Oct. 26.
The remaining classes in the series will be held Dec. 14 (Understanding Ingredients); March 15, 2025 (Crafting Classic Cocktails); and June 14, 2025 (Creativity and Custom Cocktails.) All classes will be held at von Stiehl, 115 Navarino St. in Algoma, at 2-4 pm. Participants do not need to attend every class.
The Understanding Ingredients class will overview the differences between spirits, general uses of mixers and modifiers, and how to use all these variables to create the right balance of acidity, sweetness and dilution. Participants will learn how to create three cocktails – a negroni, a daiquiri and a bourbon rickey – and leave with a set of whiskey stones and glasses.
The Crafting Classic Cocktails class will explore how ingredient substitutions can modify flavor profiles and how garnishes can enhance drinks. Attendees will learn how to create an old fashioned, a margarita and a Manhattan, and they’ll go home with silicone ice molds.
Participants in the Creativity and Custom Cocktails class will learn the basics of developing a recipe based on available ingredients, experimenting with different flavors and presenting a cocktail in a stylish way. Guests will make their own drinks with limited guidance from instructors and leave with a cocktail-smoking kit.
Each class costs $70. Space is limited to 20 people per class, so early reservations are recommended. Visit vonstiehl.com for more information.
