Southern Door’s boys basketball team has added a WIAA Division 4 regional championship to its Packerland Conference title this season.
The No. 2-seeded Eagles won a regional title for the second year in a row Saturday with a 76-62 home victory over No. 6-seeded Algoma. The win also marked the third consecutive time this season Southern Door defeated the Wolves, with the other two wins being part of the Eagles’ 16-0 conference record.
The regional championship turned out to be a closely competitive contest, which Southern Door led 32-28 at halftime, before the Eagles pulled away in the second half when two of the Wolves’ starters, Braeden Leist and Carson Liest, fouled out of the game.
Southern Door shot 22-28 from the charity stripe, compared to 4-6 for Algoma.
The Eagles had three players score in double figures led by Drew Daoust with a game-high 34 points, which included 11 made free throws. Caden Pierre added 18 points with four threes, while Tyler Neinas scored 16 more with three three-pointers.
The Wolves, who made 10 baskets behind the arc, were led by Parker Lischka with 26 points and six threes. Chase Romdenne added 13 points.
Southern Door, which improved its overall season record to 23-3, advances to the sectional semifinals Thursday at 7 pm at Green Bay Southwest, where the Eagles will face No. 1-seeded Bonduel.
The semifinal winner advances to the sectional title game March 15 at 7 pm at Stevens Point Area Senior High to face the winner of Thursday’s semifinal between No. 1-seeded Auburndale and No. 2-seeded Stratford.
