April 5, 194 – April 1, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dr. Alan William Haubenschild, April 1, 2025. Alan was surrounded by his family as he made his final journey.
Alan was born on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1942 to Kenneth and Glendora (Herde) Haubenschild in Bensenville, Illinois. The family moved to Green Bay when Alan was three years old. He graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1960 and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1965 with a Bachelors of Science Degree.
He started his career path in Dentistry at Marquette School of Dentistry , graduating in 1969. Upon graduation he was honored as the number one clinician in his class.
He served in the US Army Dental Corps from 1965 – 1973, with active duty from 1969-1972.
He had a prosthodontic residency at Wood VA and Maxillofacial residency from MD Anderson in Texas, rebuilding patients faces that were ravaged by disfiguring cancer.
In 1976, he moved his family to Algoma and set up a private dental practice until his retirement in 2013. Throughout his 41 years of practice, he was dedicated to performing the “Art of Dentistry” in caring for his many patients. While tirelessly working, he obtained a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry and Mastership in Dentistry at Marquette.
Alan’s first patient in dental school was Sharon Klug, who would one day become his wife. Alan and Sharon (Lohry) married April 14, 1984 and worked side by side building a thriving dental practice, raising four children and a wonderful life together.
In Alan’s youth, he had an intense love of the outdoors, starting with achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He joined the Wisconsin Hoofers while at UW Madison. Alan would regale friends and family with tales of his outdoor adventures – climbing mountains, including the Grand Tetons, scaling rock formations at Devil’s Lake, scuba diving and white water rafting. Alan came face to face with a polar bear while canoeing down the Churchhill River in Manitoba, Canada, the Polar Bear Capital of the world.
He instilled his love of the outdoors in his children with fishing, camping and even building a year round glamping tent in the backyard.
Alan was an incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable man, soaking up everything he read, especially about history. He loved tinkering in his shop for hours and tending to his yard.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Sharon and children, Tracy (Rob) Ancheta, Michael (Monica) Haubenschild, David (Sarah) Haubenschild, Steven (Kirsten) Klug; grandchildren Madeline, Benito, Mason, Maverick, Gwyneth, Tessa, Desirae, Joseph and Elizabeth.
Alan was preceded in death by his son Glenn (age 23 4/15/1995), parents, three infant siblings and many four-legged family members, including his and Sharon’s beloved Golden Retrievers-Jarod, Molly and Bear.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Golden Retriever Rescue of Wisconsin (GRROW) or the Kenneth Haubenschild Scholarship Fund at N.W.T.C.
Our heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Sycamore Lodge, who showed such compassion and dedicated care to “Doc” this past year and especially in his final days.
There will be a private family service for Alan at the Schinderle Funeral Home, Algoma.
