Jane Ruth Zak Maufort, 93, of Sister Bay, was called Home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 7, 2025 at Serenity Spring Senior Living at Scandia Village in Sister Bay.
She was born June 13, 1931 in Ellison Bay, the daughter of Edward Phillip Dehos and Ruth Mary (Knutson) Dehos. Jane attended grade school in Baileys Harbor and graduated from Gibraltar High School.
She met Sebastian Delano Zak at a local dance, and they were united in marriage on June 17, 1950 at St. Mary’s of the Lake Catholic Church in Baileys Harbor (now Stella Maris Parish-Baileys Harbor site) where she remained a lifelong member. Together, they resided on Plateau Road in the Town of Gibraltar and operated their dairy farm.
Jane and Sebastian were blessed with five children: Christine, Diane, Beverly, Darrel, and Theresa.
While Jane’s primary care was devoted to caring for her family and farming at home, she started working for Crown Drapery in Sister Bay. She also worked for Krause’s Edgewater Motel in Sister Bay.
Jane and Sebastian shared nearly 30 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on February 2, 1980.
On October 10, 1981, Jane married Joseph Francis Maufort at St. Mary’s of the Lake Catholic Church. They shared over 18 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on August 9, 2000.
At church, Jane was a member of the St. Mary’s of the Lake Altar and Rosary Sodality. She had a passion for art and liked painting in oils as well as watercolor. Jane also enjoyed working with fabric and making jewelry and teddy bears. She loved traveling to other countries with Francis and also liked camping in their motor home.
Jane will be missed by her children, Christine (Duane) Ohman of the Town of Gibraltar, Diane (Peter) Smith of the Town of Liberty Grove, Beverly (Wayne) Brungraber of Little Sturgeon Bay, Darrel (Sandra) Zak of the Town of Gibraltar, and Theresa (Eric Landen) Jeanquart of Iron Mountain, Michigan, and Jennifer (Brad) Stallsmith of Green Bay; grandchildren, Jenny (Cory) Mahoney and Benjamin Ohman, Laurie (Joe) Stafford and Michael (Brittney Voss) Sitte and Erik Smith, Christopher Brungraber and Anthony “Tony” (Emmalee) Brungraber, Jeremiah (Lori Olson) Zak, Joey (Robyn Neilsen) Zak, and Amy Zak, and Stacy (Rob Duncan) Mantor and Melanie (Joe) Clark; great-granchildren, Amber, Novalee, Christina, and Hayley Mahoney, Evelyn Ohman, Aaron Stafford, Briar Sitte, Tyler Bongle, Joshua Zak, Samuel Rayome, Collin and Cason Mantor, and Caleb and Zachary Clark; brother, Daniel (Marilyn) Dehos of Grand Rapids, Michigan; other siblings-in-law; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; great-grandson, Brandon Ohman; siblings, Edward (Alice) Dehos, Leland Dehos, David Dehos, Gloria (Charles) Rex, and William Dehos; other siblings-in-law; and other relatives.
Jane’s life will be honored with Mass of Christian Burial prayed at 11 am on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at Stella Maris Parish-Baileys Harbor site, 8013 State Highway 57, with Fr. Thomas Farrell as celebrant. She will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s of the Lake Cemetery in Baileys Harbor, beside her first husband, Sebastian.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church, Thursday morning after 9:00 am until 10:40 am.
