Janice Marie Virlee, 89, of Sturgeon Bay, died Sunday morning, Jan. 12, 2025, at Cardinal Ridge CBRF.
She was born Oct. 6, 1935, in Sturgeon Bay, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Genevieve (Pfeifer) Virlee. Janice graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School with the class of 1953. She worked at her father’s business, Virlee’s Linoleum Shop and waitressed at the Carmen Hotel in downtown Sturgeon Bay. She graduated from Mount Mary College in 1957 with a degree in sociology and speech then taught at St. Joseph Academy for three years. From 1960-1968, she was called into religious service with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and received her habit name, Cecelia Lauren, on March 19, 1961, and reception on Aug. 22, 1965. Janice taught elementary school in St. Louis, St. Joseph Academy, and St. Thomas Aquinas High School. She received her master’s degree in education from DePaul University in 1970. From 1968-1998 Janice taught English and American History in Kenosha. She retired and returned home to Sturgeon Bay in 2000.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Janice was also a member of the Kenosha Unified Board from 1968-1998; KEA from 1972-1980 and their president 1973-1974; the WEAC board from 1974-1980; and the board of directors and Chair of the WEA Insurance Trust from 1980-2005. She served on the Wisconsin Education Council, and the National Education Associating.
Janice is survived by her brother, Richard “Biz” (Sharon) Virlee of the Town of Sevastopol; nieces and nephews, Beth Virlee of Neenah, Jeff (Maria) Virlee [and their children, Stella and Amelia] of Neenah, Jay (Katie) Virlee of Baileys Harbor [and their children, Jacob and Molly], Gretchen (Christopher) Virlee-Wagner of Dexter, Michigan.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and brother, Michael (Paula) Virlee.
Mass of Christian Burial will be prayed at 11 am on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Matthew Rappl officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church prior to Mass on Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 9:30- 11:00 am.
