May 21, 1945 – Feb. 28, 2025
Sue Andra Lackey, 79, of the Town of Sevastopol, died Friday morning, Feb. 28, 2025 at Serenity Spring Senior Living at Scandia Village in Sister Bay.
She was born May 21, 1945 in Robinson, Illinois, the daughter of Alva and Doris (Battershell) Lackey. Sue grew up in Stoy, Illinois and attended Bible Chapel. She graduated from Oblong Community High School in Oblong, Illinois with the class of 1963. Sue went on to study piano and music education at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. She did advanced study in music education at Eastern Illinois University and the University of Illinois, earning a master’s degree in the field.
Sue initially taught music at the middle school level in Milwaukee. She went to teach at Shorewood Middle School, north of Milwaukee, for several years. There, Sue met fellow music teacher, Susan Kay Hickman. They shared a special friendship that spanned over 50 years.
Sue and Susan both taught for Illinois Community Unit School District 300 for the remainder of their teaching careers. Sue worked as a choral director, a dean of students, and assisted in many high school musicals. She retired from teaching in 2001.
Following retirement, Sue and Susan moved to Door County full-time, to their home on Bay Shore Drive where they enjoyed their neighbors and life in “the Door.” They moved to Cherry Hills in the Town of Sevastopol in 2020.
Sue enjoyed making picture quilts and often showed her quilts at the Harbor Ridge Winery in the Town of Egg Harbor where “the Sues” held a quilt show for a number of years.
In addition to quilting, Sue’s piano playing made her many friends over the years. If you could hum the song, Sue could play it. Her last concert was for the residents at Serenity Springs when she first arrived.
Sue will be missed by her best friend and partner in life, Susan Hickman; Susan’s family; dear friends; and the staff at the White Gull Inn and other fine eateries up and down the Door.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Nancy Lackey.
No services are scheduled to be held. Sue will be laid to rest in Robinson Cemetery in Robinson Township, Illinois, beside her parents and sister.
