Gibraltar/Washington Island’s baseball team did all the scoring Thursday when the Vikings opened their Packerland Conference schedule with a 7-0 victory at Sevastopol.
After holding a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first and one more in the top of the second, Gibraltar/Washington Island added four insurance runs in the seventh inning.
Of the Vikings’ eight hits, Cam Munao and Luke LeRicha tallied two singles apiece, with Munao driving in two runs. Brady Kita doubled with an RBI. Liam Lindenberg singled and drove in two runs. Bennett Isaacson-Krueger and Owen Dannhausen also singled.
Gibraltar/Washington Island’s Aaron Brey pitched seven shutout innings to record the complete-game victory, allowing only two hits with one walk and a hit batter while striking out six.
The Pioneers’ Tyler Grooters and Logan Schuh each singled.
Andrew Wiesner pitched the first four innings for Sevastopol and recorded the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits with three walks while striking out seven. Bo Tanck pitched the final three frames, giving up four earned runs on five hits with four walks while striking out two.
The Vikings, who improved to 1-0 in the Packerland and 4-0 overall, next host a conference game Tuesday against Algoma.
Sevastopol (0-1, 0-2) next plays a conference game Tuesday at Peshtigo.
