Brown, Goldstein & Levy Partner Anthony May, Attorney Lauren DiMartino, and Paralegal Kayle Hill presented at the 2025 Jacobus tenBroek Disability Law Symposium, hosted March 20 to 21 at the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute in Baltimore. BGL continued its longstanding and proud partnership of the NFB-hosted event.
The Symposium is the leading disability law conference in the United States that brings nationally renowned disability rights advocates together to examine issues, explore strategies, and pursue the full participation of people with disabilities in every facet of the community. This year’s theme, “Democracy, Justice, and the Rule of Law: Protecting Our Right to Live in the World,” focused on defending the rights of individuals with disabilities in a quickly shifting legal landscape, with two days of plenary sessions and workshops hosted by leading disability rights advocates.
The Symposium’s BGL-led presentations were:
- “Radical Person-Centeredness: The Roles, Responsibilities and Rights in Home and Community-Based Services and Programs,” presented by Lauren DiMartino alongside Nick Burton, CEO of N. Burton Counseling, and James Orman, program coordinator for People on the Go Maryland.
- “Successfully Litigating Effective Communication Claims to a Jury,” presented by Anthony May and Kayle Hill alongside Tim Elder, founding attorney of TRE Legal.
- “Equal Opportunity to Enjoy One’s Dwelling: FHA and HOA Accommodations Under the Law,” presented by Lauren DiMartino alongside Leslie Dickensen, attorney for Disability Rights Maryland, and Lila Miller, attorney for Relman Colfax.
Managing Partner Jessie Weber also served on the Steering Committee for the event. The annual event honors the legacy of Dr. Jacobus tenBroek who founded the National Federation of the Blind in 1940. BGL’s work with the NFB extends as far back as 1986, when Founding Partner Dan Goldstein first partnered with the organization to advance the rights of blind Americans. He continued his advocacy on behalf of the NFB until his retirement in 2017 and was the first lawyer to successfully argue that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applied to the virtual realm. Following his retirement, Partner Eve Hill leads BGL’s work on behalf of the NFB.
