Eve Hill quoted by LGBTQ+ news organization about an ADA lawsuit in which she represents transgender women in Maryland correctional facilities who experienced assault and abuse because of their transgender status. – Go Health Pro

Brown, Goldstein & Levy partner Eve Hill was quoted as a legal authority by MadyCast News (MCN), a not-for-profit LGBTQ+ news organization, in article about an ongoing lawsuit against the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services in which she is representing transgender women who were held in men’s correctional facilities, suffered sexual assault, denial of hormone treatment, and ongoing harassment because of their transgender status.

As reported by MCN, Eve represents three transgender women whose treatment in Maryland correctional facilities violated the Americans with Disabilities Act and Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments. The lawsuit’s core claims survived the State of Maryland’s motion for dismissal in December 2024. However, Judge Matthew Maddox dismissed some of the other claims without prejudice. Despite this, Eve is confident in the strength of the lawsuit.

“The reason [Judge Maddox] dismissed most things was because we couldn’t identify the people who took the action,” Eve said, as quoted in the article. “So when we get discovery, which should be able to start soon, we’ll be able to identify those people and [amend the lawsuit] to add them.”

Eve also condemned both Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown and Governor Wes Moore for “failing to carry out the very principles they espouse. In short, the Department of Corrections, which they control, is blatantly carrying out the very discrimination and cruelty they claim to oppose, but they do nothing to stop it and, in fact, defend it vigorously.”

MCN is run by independent transgender journalist Mady Castigan, who says everyone who contributes to MCN is absolutely devoted to reporting the truth of the threats trans people face and exists to counter misinformation and unethical practices elsewhere in the media. MCN has been cited by publications including The Washington Post, Erin in the Morning, Advocate, and Engadget.
