Retired Brown, Goldstein & Levy Partner Joshua Treem was honored with the prestigious Robert C. Heeney Memorial Award by the Maryland State Bar Association Section of Criminal Law and Practice at a reception on March 19. The Heeney award is given annually to an individual who exemplifies the highest professional standards and achievement in the field of criminal law and practice during their distinguished careers. The Section Council unanimously voted to approve Josh’s nomination for the award in late 2024 based on his outstanding career in criminal defense in the Greater Baltimore area.

BGL was proud to honor Josh at the awards celebration, hosted at The Turn House in Columbia, Maryland. Attending members of the BGL community included Partners Andy Levy and Kobie Flowers, Director of Operations Nira Pughsley, Receptionist Linell Cutchember, and Paralegal Manager Denise Altobelli. Andy Levy received the Heeney Award in 2020, and previous awardees include Judge J. Frederick Motz, former Federal Public Defender Fred Bennett, former Maryland Defender Paul DeWolfe, and more.

I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honor than Josh Treem,” said Jim Wyda, federal public defender for the District of Maryland. “He is an excellent trial lawyer and a professional of the highest integrity. Josh somehow always made time to be a mentor and friend to so many of us. Through the example he set in his own work, and through his mentoring of so many others, Josh has set the standard for criminal defense work in the federal and state courts of Maryland.”

A renowned criminal defense attorney in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Josh made a significant impact during his time at BGL. He has been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including as the 2023 Lawyer of the Year for General Practice Criminal Defense, 2022 Lawyer of the Year for Civil Rights Law, 2020 Lawyer of the Year for General Practice Criminal Defense, 2018 Lawyer of the Year for General Practice Criminal Defense, and the 2016 Lawyer of the Year for Criminal Defense: Non-White-Collar in the Baltimore area by Best Lawyers in America. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Board of Criminal Lawyers.

Congratulations to Josh on this well-deserved award, honoring an incredible career in law!
