On November 1, BGL attorneys Neel Lalchandani and Jamie Strawbridge participated in a panel discussion hosted by Georgetown Law’s American Criminal Law Review and Disabled Law Student Association. The panel was part of a day-long symposium, “Disability and the Criminal Legal System,” which explored how the Americans with Disabilities Act and other federal laws can offer enhanced protections for persons with disabilities who are the victims of police misconduct, including with respect to use of force, arrests, and custodial interrogations.
Both Neel and Jamie took part in a 90-minute “Police Response Panel,” which was the first panel of the day’s program. Jamie acted as the moderator while Neel served as one of four panelists, alongside Jamelia Morgan from the Center for Racial and Disability Justice at Northwestern University, Jean Zachariasiewicz from the Special Litigation Section of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, and Cory Bernstein from the National Disability Rights Network.
The Police Response Panel gave Neel and Jamie the opportunity to share insights regarding the intersection of civil rights, disability rights, and police misconduct. Neel, who is also an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown Law, drew from his own experience representing victims of police misconduct in Maryland to share his thoughts on how disability law can best protect people with disabilities during interactions with law enforcement, while Jamie, a former investigative reporter, moved the panel forward with thoughtful questions that dug deep into each panelist’s areas of expertise.
