1. Ghandhi Research Seminar Series 2024- 2025. Global Law at Reading (GLAR) is Reading’s research hub for public international law, EU law and human rights law, and it has a proud international reputation for research excellence in these areas. The Ghandhi Research Seminar Series was launched in 2015, named in honour of Professor Sandy Ghandhi, who taught at the School of Law from 1978 to 2013 and remains an emeritus professor at Reading. Anyone is welcome to attend these seminars, and attendance is free. 2. Call for Submissions: The American Society of International Law Interest Group on International Legal Theory. The American Society of International Law (ASIL) Interest Group on International Legal Theory has issued its annual call for submissions for its International Refugee Law Student Writing Prize. More details about the award criteria and submission process are available in the attached call for submissions. The winner will be recognized at the ASIL Annual Meeting in April 2025, as well as receiving a free one-year ASIL student membership, free admission to the ASIL Annual Meeting, assistance with travel expenses, and a credit to purchase books from Oxford University Press.

1. TwoLaw – Lecture Series on the Laws of War. On 28 November 2024, from 6-7 pm CET, Claire Vergerio (independent scholar) will give the next lecture of the TwoLaw – Lecture Series on the Laws of war. The topic of the lecture is “War, States, and International Order: Alberico Gentili and the Foundational Myth of the Laws of War” and focuses on the historical development of the prerogative of sovereign states to wage war. Vergerio argues that this arrangement was not derived from the ideas of Alberico Gentili and that this story was invented by a group of prominent international lawyers. 2. Call for Papers: Guidance, Expertise, Theoretical Authority and the Legitimacy of International Governance. This workshop will bring together international lawyers, philosophers, political scientists and scholars in related fields interested in exploring the role that epistemic authority and expertise play in today’s global governance. Abstracts are invited for a 2 day workshop to take place at Maynooth University, Ireland on 20 – 21 March 2025 to be sent to theoreticalauthority (at) gmail(,)com by 5 January 2025. Papers may address questions at a general level, or through a focus on one or more specific regimes, organisations, courts or tribunals. Contributions are invited from scholars in law, philosophy, political science and related disciplines, with a view to developing an interdisciplinary conversation around these questions. 1. Call for Papers: Netherlands Yearbook of International Law. The Netherlands Yearbook of International Law is inviting submissions for Volume 55 – ‘The manifold forms of contemporary international legal scholarship’. The volume editors invite contributions that address the interplay between substance and form in contemporary modes of international legal work, for example the recording of podcasts, the use of X or blogposts – which may in turn be juxtaposed with more ‘traditional’ outputs such as books or articles. The full call for papers can be found here. Authors may submit an abstract of no more than 400 words by 25 November 2024. Authors of selected abstracts will be informed by 8 December and will then be invited to send a first full draft of no more than 10,000 words including footnotes by 24 March 2025. ICON-S Interest Group on Climate Change and Migration are hosting a webinar “The Australia-Tuvalu Falepili Union: Balancing Climate Mobility, Sovereignty, and Cultural Preservation” The event will take place on Tuesday 19 November 2024 at 10am London/11am CET/9pm Sydney/11pm Wellington and offer a discussion examining the world’s first bilateral agreement on climate mobility. 1. Call for Papers: BIICL-SLS International Law Section Workshop. The British Institute of International & Comparative Law and the International Law section of the Society of Legal Scholars are hosting a one-day hybrid workshop taking place in central London on 26 March 2025 under the title ‘Soft Law in International Law’. The organizers, Dr Jean-Pierre Gauci, Georgia Greville, Dr Saeed Bagheri and Dr Solon Solomon, invite abstracts to be submitted by 16 December 2024 to biicl-sls-workshop {at} biicl(.)org together with a short 150-word bio. 2. Call for Papers: Strasbourg Observers 15th Anniversary Symposium. Founded in April 2010, the Strasbourg Observers Blog is soon celebrating its 15th Anniversary. At this occasion, they are organizing a symposium in Ghent (Belgium) for which they invite abstracts (and panel proposals) that analyse and reflect on important developments in the ECtHR case law and/or scholarship over these past 15 years. They are particularly interested in abstracts that focus on the Court’s ways of reasoning across various thematic areas as well as in abstracts that take a step outside of the Court’s case law and delve into questions about how it operates as an institution. They also welcome abstracts discussing novel approaches and methods (both quantitative and qualitative) in ECtHR scholarship. Abstracts of around 300 words should be sent to strasbourgobservers {at} gmail(.)com by 2 December 2024 with the indivudal’s name, affiliation and a short bio. Submissions for a collection of abstracts as a complete panel proposal should indicate the panel convenor and panel title on top of the information requested for individual abstract submission.
